Join NAMI Durham's Mission

NAMI Durham (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a statewide grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults living with mental illnesses and their families through education, support, and advocacy.

As a non-profit grassroots organization, we rely heavily on the support and dedication of volunteers for our programs. Whether you are interested in lending a hand for our special events, facilitating a support group, advocating for mental health issues, providing administrative support, presenting educational programs, and/or sharing your story; we here at NAMI would like to talk with you about joining our team.

There are many ways to get involved:

  • Become a trained peer-leader to facilitate a support group or teach a class

  • Mentor peers who are facing mental health challenges to provide hope for recovery

  • Share your story to help others understand mental illness

  • Raise mental health awareness as a NAMI Durham ambassador

  • Join a Board Committee

While NAMI Durham is not a certification site for the Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential, certain volunteer activities may count towards your certification hours. For more information on CPSS requirements, click here.

All prospective volunteers should complete the Volunteer Interest Form. After submitting the interest form, you will be contacted to discuss your interests and next steps.

NAMI Durham has the following volunteer requirements:

  • All volunteers must be over the age of 15. Certain volunteer roles require individuals to be over the age of 18.

  • Volunteers under the age of 18 must have parent/guardian consent in order to volunteer.

  • There may be additional requirements, such as training programs, for certain volunteer roles.
